From the 3C2A and NJCAA to NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and the International Stage

California wrestling history is often measured by what happens at the CIF State Championships. A State championship, medal or qualification provides an important snapshot of a wrestler’s high-school career. But for many of California’s most accomplished wrestlers, that snapshot captures only the beginning.

The California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) has been one of the most important—and least fully documented—links between California high-school wrestling and national collegiate success.

For decades, California wrestlers have entered the community-college system from dramatically different starting points. Some arrived as CIF State champions and nationally recognized high-school All-Americans. Others were State medalists or qualifiers. Some had never qualified for the CIF State Championships.

Many went on to become 3C2A State champions, medalist, and All-Americans, and their careers continued into NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III programs, NAIA national championships, NJCAA All-American competition and, in exceptional cases, the international and Olympic stages.

The resulting career paths include:

CIF State Champion → 3C2A Champion → NCAA or NAIA National Champion

CIF State Medalist → 3C2A All-American → NCAA or NAIA All-American

CIF State Qualifier → 3C2A All-American → NCAA All-American

No CIF State Qualification → 3C2A Champion/All-American → NCAA or NAIA All-American

And, at the highest level:

California High School → 3C2A/NJCAA → National Collegiate Success → World/Olympic Competition

These careers demonstrate an important principle for the historical study of California wrestling: high-school achievement and eventual collegiate achievement are related, but they are not always linear or predictable from the CIF State résumé alone.

For the “Who Are the Top 100 Wrestlers in California History?” project, that distinction matters. A wrestler’s CIF State résumé records what he accomplished during one stage of his career. Following that wrestler through community college and into NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA and international competition reveals the broader career.

The Documented Population

The statistical analysis is based on a documented population of 171 unique California wrestlers who came through the 3C2A and/or NJCAA pathway and subsequently earned at least one NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III or NAIA All-American honor.

The 172 figure represents individual wrestlers, not cumulative All-American honors. A wrestler who earned recognition at multiple collegiate levels is counted once.

The population should therefore be viewed as a documented research population, rather than a claim that every qualifying California wrestler in history has been identified.

The Numbers Behind the Pipeline

The geographic distribution of the 172 wrestlers is particularly revealing.

The Southern Section produced the largest share with 55 wrestlers (31.9%), followed by the Central Section with 34 (19.8%) and the Sac-Joaquin Section with 32 (18.6%). Together, those three sections accounted for 121 of the 172 wrestlers, or 70.3% of the documented population.

The North Coast Section contributed 17 wrestlers (9.9%), while the Central Coast Section contributed 16 (9.3%), giving those two sections a combined total of 33 wrestlers, or 19.3%. The Northern Section contributed eight (4.7%), while Los Angeles City and San Diego contributed four each (2.3%), and Oakland City contributed two (1.2%). No San Francisco Section wrestler is currently documented in the database.

In total, nine CIF sections are represented.

The geographic distribution demonstrates both concentration and breadth. A large share of the documented wrestlers came from three major sections, but the community-college pathway extended throughout much of California.

From the 3C2A to the World and Olympic Stage

The most extraordinary evidence of the community-college pathway comes from California wrestlers whose careers continued beyond collegiate competition to the World Championships, World Cup, Pan American Championships and Olympic Games.

Joe Gonzales — East Los Angeles College to the Olympic Games

Joe Gonzales of Montebello High School represents one of the most accomplished careers in the study.

A 1975 Junior National Champion and two-time Junior All-American in freestyle, Gonzales continued to East Los Angeles College, where he became a 3C2A State Champion and All-American.

He then advanced to CSU Bakersfield, winning two NCAA Division II National Championships and earning two All-American honors, before adding an NCAA Division I championship and two additional All-American honors.

His accomplishments continued internationally. Gonzales became a five-time U.S. World Team member, won the Tbilisi Tournament, captured three World Cup championships and one silver medal, and earned a World bronze medal at the 1982 World Championships before representing the United States at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Heath Sims — Cerritos College to the Olympic Team

Heath Sims of Woodbridge High School entered the community-college system as a two-time CIF State Champion, three-time Junior All-American in freestyle and Greco-Roman, and ASICS All-American.

At Cerritos College, Sims became a 3C2A State Champion and two-time All-American.

He subsequently became a seven-time national champion, a Pan American bronze medalist and a U20 World silver medalist before earning selection to the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team in Greco-Roman.

Jonovan Smith — Cerritos College to the 2024 Olympic Games

Jonovan Smith of Birmingham High School provides a modern example.

A two-time CIF State medalist, Smith was also a Junior Fargo National Champion and two-time All-American in freestyle and a Cadet Fargo All-American in Greco-Roman.

At Cerritos College, he became a 3C2A State Champion and All-American.

His international résumé included Pan American silver and bronze medals in Greco-Roman, a Pan American U23 bronze medal in beach wrestling and a fifth-place finish at the UWW World Championships in Puerto Rico in freestyle.

In 2024, Smith represented Puerto Rico at the Paris Olympic Games.

Jamill Kelly — Community College to Olympic Silver

Jamill Kelly provides another extraordinary example.

Kelly’s collegiate career included NJCAA success before his progression to NCAA Division I at Oklahoma State and then to the senior international level.

He ultimately represented the United States at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, where he won an Olympic silver medal.

Craig Schoene — Skyline College to the Pan American Stage

Craig Schoene of Crestmoor High School was a 1976 CIF State fifth-place medalist who continued to Skyline College, where he became a 3C2A State medalist, finalist and two-time All-American.

He then advanced to CSU Bakersfield, earning NCAA Division II All-American recognition before continuing into international competition.

Schoene ultimately became a Pan American gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling and made the 1978 U.S. World Team.

Jesse Ruiz – Santa Ana College to Pan American Games and Olympic Level

Jesse Ruiz of Santa Ana Valley High School was a CIF State Medalist that went on to earn two 3C2A All-American honors at Santa Ana Community College, followed by NAIA National Championship at Menlo. He then went on to earn a Bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Freestyle and In 2012, competed at the Olympic Games representing Mexico.

International Reach

At least four documented wrestlers—Joe Gonzales, Heath Sims, Jonovan Smith and Jamill Kelly—reached the World/Olympic level.

Gonzales and Kelly won Olympic medals, while Craig Schoene expands the documented international group to five when Pan American competition is included.

These careers demonstrate the most extensive version of the pathway:

California High School → Community College → Collegiate Success → International Competition → Olympic Stage

The 3C2A-to-NCAA Division I Pathway

The connection between California’s community colleges and NCAA Division I wrestling is particularly evident among wrestlers who earned All-American honors at both levels.

The documented Division I group contains 15 wrestlers, representing several different high-school entry points.

Sylvester Carver of Encinal High School was a CIF State medalist who continued to Chabot College, where he earned two 3C2A All-American honors before advancing to NCAA Division I and becoming a two-time NCAA Division I All-American.

Yero Washington, Stan Greene, Bill Cripps, Perry Shea, Franc Affentranger, Ati Conner, Alfonzo Tucker, Greg Gascon, Flo Rocha, Matt Gibson, Alfred Gutierrez and Mike Elliott likewise progressed through the California community-college system before reaching NCAA Division I All-American competition.

Two wrestlers are especially significant because they demonstrate that CIF State qualification was not universal among eventual Division I All-Americans.

Raphael Davis did not qualify for the CIF State Championships, yet advanced through the community-college pathway and ultimately became an NCAA Division I All-American.

Serge Mezheritsky provides another example. He also did not qualify for CIF State, but his collegiate career ultimately reached NCAA Division I All-American status after continuing through the community-college pathway.

The Division I group therefore contains several distinct entry points, including both established CIF State competitors and wrestlers who reached national collegiate recognition without a CIF State qualification.

NCAA Division II: From California’s Community Colleges to the National Stage

The Division II group further broadens the picture. Its documented careers include wrestlers who entered college as CIF State champions, State medalists, State qualifiers and wrestlers who never qualified for CIF State.

Steve Draper — From No CIF State Qualification to NCAA Division II Champion

Steve Draper is one of the clearest examples.

Draper did not qualify for the CIF State Championships. At Santa Ana College, however, he became a 3C2A State Champion and All-American.

He then advanced to CSU Bakersfield, where he became an NCAA Division II National Champion and two-time All-American.

No CIF State Qualification → 3C2A State Champion → NCAA Division II National Champion

The broader Division II group includes Bob Rinehart, Gene Choi, Brett Southwick, Casey Hankin and Tony Ramirez, among others, demonstrating that California’s community-college system served wrestlers entering college with widely different high-school credentials.

NCAA Division III: Another Route to National Recognition

The documented Division III group includes Eric Woolsey, Mike Fredenburg, Dwight Miller, Steve Martin, Daniel Ruiz, Arnulfo Olea, Nathan Pike, Vertis Elmore, Tom Pender, Roy Coudright and Mike Malkovich.

Their careers include State medalists, State qualifiers and wrestlers whose high-school résumés did not initially reflect the level of collegiate success they would eventually achieve.

Mike Malkovich — CIF State Qualifier to NCAA Division III All-American

Mike Malkovich of Pittsburg High School provides an especially useful example.

A 1976 CIF State qualifier, Malkovich continued to Diablo Valley College, where he became a 3C2A State medalist.

He then advanced to Humboldt State, where he earned NCAA Division III All-American honors.

Malkovich’s addition brings the documented population to 171 wrestlers and the North Coast contingent to 17.

NAIA: From the CIF State Circuit to National Champions

The NAIA represents another major branch of California’s community-college pathway.

The documented population includes James Guizar, Jesse Juarez, Jesse Hellinger, Saul Lucatero, Jesse Ruiz, Andrew Schulte, Larry Johnson, Joe Evano and Ken Wharry, among others.

James Guizar

James Guizar of Imperial High School was a CIF State Champion who continued to Palomar College, where he became a 3C2A State Champion and All-American.

He then advanced to Menlo College, becoming a two-time NAIA National Champion and two-time All-American.

Jesse Juarez of North Torrance High School represents another Southern Section pathway from CIF competition through community college and into NAIA national competition.

Jesse Hellinger, Andrew Schulte, Larry Johnson, Joe Evano and Ken Wharry provide additional examples of California wrestlers whose careers continued through the community-college system into NAIA All-American competition.

The NAIA record demonstrates that the community-college pathway extended beyond NCAA wrestling and into another national collegiate championship structure.

California’s NJCAA All-Americans

From CIF State Competition to National Junior-College Success

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) provides another important chapter in California’s collegiate wrestling history.

The documented NJCAA group includes Jamill Kelly, Paul Gomez, Vinny Pisani, Darryl Aiello, Willie Parks, Nic Aguilar, Jose Sanchez, Austin “Rocky” Raby, Joseph Michel, Tyler Noon, Chad Mast, Alex Ramirez and Brandon Bollinger, among others.

These careers range from CIF State qualifiers to champions and from nationally recognized high-school wrestlers to athletes who continued developing after high school.

Chad Mast — 3C2A and NJCAA All-American

Chad Mast entered college as a CIF State Champion and two-time medalist with multiple national high-school honors.

At Fresno City College, Mast became a 3C2A State Champion and All-American before earning NJCAA All-American recognition at Muskegon College.

Alex Ramirez — 3C2A Champion to NJCAA Champion

Alex Ramirez entered college as a CIF State Champion and NHSCA National Champion.

At Mt. SAC, he became a 3C2A State Champion and All-American before continuing to Clackamas Community College, where he became an NJCAA National Champion and All-American.

Brandon Bollinger — CIF State Qualifier to National Recognition

Brandon Bollinger entered college as a CIF State qualifier.

At Victor Valley College, he developed into a 3C2A State Champion and All-American, followed by NJCAA All-American recognition at North Idaho College.

The NJCAA/3C2A Connection

Mast, Ramirez and Bollinger demonstrate that California wrestlers could move between community-college systems while continuing to compete for national recognition.

Other documented NJCAA careers include Paul Gomez, Vinny Pisani, Darryl Aiello, Willie Parks, Nic Aguilar, Jose Sanchez, Austin “Rocky” Raby, Joseph Michel and Tyler Noon, along with Jamill Kelly, whose career ultimately reached the Olympic podium.

Together, the numbers illustrate a broad statewide pipeline, with 172 wrestlers progressing from California community colleges to major collegiate All-American achievement and, in five documented cases, to international competition.

Beyond the CIF State Résumé

The careers documented here demonstrate why historical evaluation should extend beyond a wrestler’s high-school résumé.

A CIF State championship is significant, as is a State medal or qualification. But those achievements do not represent the entirety of a wrestler’s competitive career.

The community-college record provides another lens.

One wrestler may enter the 3C2A as a State champion. Another may arrive as a State medalist or qualifier. Another may enter without a CIF State qualification. Their collegiate careers can then take very different directions.

Some become 3C2A champions. Others advance to NCAA Division I. Others become NCAA Division II or III All-Americans or national champions. Still others continue through the NAIA or NJCAA, while a select group reaches international and Olympic competition.

The careers of Joe Gonzales, Heath Sims, Jonovan Smith, Jamill Kelly, Steve Draper, Raphael Davis, Serge Mezheritsky, James Guizar and Mike Malkovich, among others, demonstrate the range of those possibilities.

That distinction is central to the “Who Are the Top 100 Wrestlers in California History?” project.

The CIF State résumé tells us what a wrestler accomplished in high school.

The broader career record tells us what happened afterward.

The 3C2A as a Historical Bridge

California’s community-college wrestling system occupies a distinctive place in the state’s wrestling history.

Its significance can be measured not only by its own champions and All-Americans, but also by what its wrestlers accomplished after leaving the community-college ranks.

The documented population includes 172 unique wrestlers who progressed through the 3C2A and/or NJCAA system and subsequently earned NCAA or NAIA All-American honors. They represent nine CIF sections, with the Southern, Central and Sac-Joaquin Sections accounting for 70.2% of the documented population.

The individual careers demonstrate the range of the pathway.

Joe Gonzales advanced from East Los Angeles College to NCAA Division II and Division I championships and ultimately the Olympic Games.

Steve Draper progressed from no CIF State qualification to a 3C2A championship and NCAA Division II national championship.

Raphael Davis and Serge Mezheritsky reached NCAA Division I All-American status despite not qualifying for CIF State.

Mike Malkovich progressed from CIF State qualification to a 3C2A State medal and NCAA Division III All-American recognition.

James Guizar moved from CIF State and 3C2A championships to two NAIA national championships.

Chad Mast, Alex Ramirez and Brandon Bollinger demonstrate the movement between the 3C2A and NJCAA systems.

And wrestlers such as Heath Sims, Jonovan Smith and Jamill Kelly demonstrate that the community-college experience could be part of a career that eventually reached the Olympic stage.

For some wrestlers, the community college was the destination.

For others, it was a bridge.

That distinction is important to the historical evaluation of California wrestlers.

The full competitive record extends beyond:

High School → 3C2A/NJCAA → NCAA/NAIA → International/Olympic Competition

The question is therefore not simply:

“What did he accomplish in high school?”

It is also:

“What did he accomplish after high school—and how far did his career ultimately extend?”

For hundreds of California wrestlers, the answer includes a chapter that began in the community colleges.

For the most accomplished, that chapter became a bridge from California wrestling to the national and international stage.
