Help Bring College Wrestling Back to Gavilan College

For nearly seven decades, the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) has served as the foundation of collegiate wrestling in California. Since its inaugural season in 1958-59, the 3C2A has developed countless champions, producing All-Americans, NCAA and NAIA standouts, and even Olympians.

Now, you have the opportunity to help write the next chapter.

Gavilan College is exploring the launch of men’s and women’s wrestling programs, and your voice matters. Wrestlers, coaches, parents, alumni, fans, and community supporters are invited to attend a Wrestling Town Hall to learn about the vision, ask questions, and help shape the future of wrestling in Gilroy.

As 3C2A wrestling experiences a resurgence—with the return of programs at the College of the Redwoods and Imperial Valley College, along with the addition of Mission College—momentum is building across California. Interest in bringing wrestling back to Gavilan College has generated excitement throughout the state’s wrestling community and beyond.

Built on Tradition: Gavilan’s Legacy of State Medalists and All-Americans

From the mid-1960s through the mid-1990s, Gavilan College quietly built a proud tradition on the 3C2A wrestling mats, producing generations of state medalists and All-Americans who established the Rams as a respected force in California community college wrestling. The program’s championship legacy began with its first state medal in 1966 when heavyweight Spencer placed fifth, paving the way for future standouts. Over the next three decades, Gavilan crowned one state champion, produced six 3C2A All-Americans, and celebrated 15 individual state medalists. The pinnacle came during the remarkable 1986 campaign when the Rams placed four wrestlers on the state podium, highlighted by Victor Cobos, who captured the 118-pound state championship, while Mike Field and Leo Guzman earned All-American honors to lead one of the finest teams in school history. Other notable performers included Terry Bautista, the 1975 state runner-up; Luke Corona, a third-place All-American in 1991; and Mike Barnes, who capped Gavilan’s storied run with All-American honors in 1994. From its first medal in 1966 to its last in 1994, Gavilan College consistently produced wrestlers capable of competing with California’s best, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire the next generation as the Rams prepare to return to the mat.
