Northern Section Grapplers Battle for Glory: A Divisional Championship Deep Dive

The road to the California State Tournament became a whole lot clearer this past weekend as the NSCIF Divisional Championships pushed the best wrestlers in the North to their absolute limits. From the high-scoring dominance of Durham to the nail-biting finishes in Division II, the atmosphere across the gyms was electric.

Here is the definitive look at how the weekend unfolded and who is carrying the momentum into the Masters at Shasta High.

Division I: The Panther Dynasty Continues

In the premier division, Chico High proved once again why they are the gold standard for wrestling in the North. Finishing with a massive 225 points, the Panthers showcased not just individual brilliance, but the depth of a roster where every single wrestler contributed to the scoreboard.

The battle for the runner-up spot was a dogfight, with Corning High putting up a valiant effort. Corning finished with 201 points—just 24 points shy of the lead. Shasta High (188) and Foothill High (150.5) rounded out the top four, while Pleasant Valley (147.5) secured the final spot in the top five.

The Chico Champions

Chico High’s dominance was punctuated by three individual titles that set the tone for the team:

  • Connor Miller (144 lbs): Miller was a technician on the mat, controlling his matches with high-level transitions.
  • Cooper Culver (157 lbs): Culver displayed incredible strength and poise, stifling his opponents’ attacks to climb the top of the podium.
  • Juan Estrada (215 lbs): A force of nature in the upper weights, Estrada’s win solidified Chico’s team trophy.

The Bigger Story: In a rare and impressive feat, the entire Chico High wrestling team has qualified for the Masters tournament. They will head to Redding with a full army of grapplers.

Division II: A Battle of Inches in Lassen

If Division I was about dominance, Division II was about grit. Lassen High emerged as the divisional champions in a razor-thin race, finishing with 182 points. They were chased all the way to the final whistle by West Valley High, who finished just six points behind at 176.

Lassen’s path to victory was built on their ability to get wrestlers into the final round. With six different grapplers advancing to the championship finals, the Grizzlies were able to rack up the crucial “placement points” needed to hoist the trophy.

Standout Performers:

  • Jordan Conoboy (144 lbs): Captured a title for Lassen with a display of high-octane offense.
  • Quentin Maumoynier (190 lbs): Maumoynier was a brick wall at 190, neutralizing every shot to claim his championship.

Rounding out the D-II Top Five: 3. Orland High (137.5) 4. Yreka High (126) 5. Anderson Union High (109.5)

Divisions III & IV: The Durham Powerhouse

The story of the weekend might just be the performance of Durham High. Competing in the combined D-III and D-IV tournament, Durham didn’t just win—they overwhelmed the competition. Scoring a massive 301.5 points, they finished a staggering 122 points ahead of the nearest competitor.

Durham’s “flex” was most evident in the individual finals. They captured a legendary seven individual titles, asserting their will across almost every weight class.

Durham’s Title Sweep:

Individual champions for Durham were crowned at:

  • 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 190, 215, and Heavyweight.

This level of performance sends a clear message to the rest of the Northern Section: Durham is coming for the Masters with everything they’ve got.

Small School Standouts:

  • East Nicolaus (179.5) took a strong second place.
  • Paradise High (117.5) showed great heart to finish third.
  • Modoc (100) and Willows (96.5) proved that the North’s smaller schools are still producing elite-level talent.

The Road Ahead: Masters at Shasta High

The dust has settled on the Divisionals, but the real test begins now. The top six finishers from each weight class have officially punched their tickets to the CIF Northern Section Masters.

This weekend (Feb 20-21), the mats at Shasta High School will host the ultimate “survive and advance” scenario. For those who can navigate the Masters bracket, the ultimate prize awaits: a trip to the State Tournament in Bakersfield.
