Clovis, CA – The Central Valley has long been a hotbed for elite amateur wrestling, but a powerhouse training center is rapidly cementing its presence on the national and world stage.
Founded in January 2025 and officially opening its doors in Clovis, California, on May 1st of that year, the SilvaBack Training Center (SBTC) was established with a singular vision: to create an environment where wrestlers could reach their absolute physical and technical potential. Born out of a need for a program focused on elite development and the international styles of freestyle and Greco-Roman, SilvaBack has quickly become a premier destination for athletes aiming for Fargo success and age-group World Team opportunities.
Importantly, SBTC operates entirely independently. It is not a feeder program for any specific high school, but rather a dedicated training ground serving any athlete in the Central Valley who shares the club’s high-level vision.

A Foundation of Positional Mastery
Step into the SilvaBack room on any given day—whether in the grinding heat of the summer or the peak of the competitive winter season—and the atmosphere is unmistakable. The room is packed with athletes working with intense purpose, yet genuinely enjoying the process.
That environment is cultivated by a distinct coaching philosophy. Rather than drilling isolated, individual moves, the SilvaBack system prioritizes positional mastery. Athletes are taught to understand complex situations on the mat, giving them the confidence and technical vocabulary to adapt, solve problems in real-time, and compete effectively no matter what their opponent throws at them.
This philosophy is backed by a highly structured, year-round periodization model. The calendar is broken into four distinct training phases, each balancing technical development, strength and conditioning, and competition prep. The coaching staff is available seven days a week, demanding a high level of commitment from both the wrestlers and their families—a mutual investment where success is the natural byproduct.

Leadership and a World-Class Staff
A room is only as good as the leaders within it, and SilvaBack boasts an exceptional staff to guide its athletes. The Advanced program (grades 7–12) is spearheaded by the Founder and Head Coach, while Clovis alumnus Sonny Cervantes serves as the Head Youth Coach, doing incredible work with the K–6th grade athletes. During the off-season, Clint McAlester steps in to fine-tune the technical aspects of the sport.
But the leadership doesn’t stop with the adults in the room. From the moment the club opened, wrestlers like Ashton Beamer, Joe Toscano, CJ Huerta, Rocklin Zinkin, and Ivan Arias set a gold standard of work ethic and discipline. As those athletes have moved on, a new guard has taken the reins. Today, wrestlers like Thiago, Thales, Paul Ruiz, and Jax Vang are the tone-setters, mentoring younger teammates and maintaining the culture of excellence that SBTC was built upon.
The Fargo Formula and National Accolades
That culture has translated to massive, predictable success at the USA Wrestling National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, alongside elite international placements.
The club’s preparation method was perfectly showcased by Sebastian “Bash” Gutierrez’s triumphant run to a 2026 Fargo Freestyle title. To the coaching staff, his championship was no surprise; it was the result of a meticulously executed spring formula. Gutierrez competed in two USA Wrestling Regional Championships, the U.S. Open, and National Duals before ever stepping foot in Fargo. By the time the national tournament rolled around, he had already been battle-tested against the country’s best. Fargo wasn’t where he became a champion—it was simply where his relentless spring preparation paid off.
The pipeline remains incredibly strong, consistently producing multiple All-Americans and World Team members across consecutive cycles, proving that the club’s competitive edge is built to last.

Looking Ahead: The International Stage
The momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Next week, the club will expand its international footprint as Mateo Campos takes the mat at the 2026 U15 Pan American Championships. Campos will be competing in Mexico City, Mexico, from July 23–25, with Izzy Silva traveling down to corner him and guide him on the international stage.

The Architect Behind the Program
While the Head Coach prefers to keep the spotlight strictly on his athletes, his own pedigree provides the blueprint for the club’s elite trajectory.
A two-time NJCAA All-American, he went on to compete at the NCAA Division I level for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga under legendary coach Terry Brands. On the international circuit, he competed through two Olympic cycles, blazing a trail as one of the first athletes to represent Mexico on the world stage. Along the way, he captured four Pan American medals and served as an alternate for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Armed with more than 15 years of Division I coaching experience—and a track record of developing multiple USA Wrestling World and Pan American Team members—he has channeled his life’s work into the Central Valley. For SilvaBack Training Center, the mission isn’t about reliving past glories; it’s about building lasting opportunities for the next generation of California’s wrestling elite.
