Golden State Glory! Mantanona and Merrill Dominate Rio for U20 Pan-American Gold

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – The California wrestling pipeline is thriving on the international stage. University of Michigan All-American Brock Mantanona and Iowa State powerhouse recruit Coby Merrill completely dismantled the competition at the U20 Pan-American Championships, bringing home the gold and proving that West Coast wrestling is an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Brock Mantanona: Untouchable at 86kg

Mantanona put on a breathtaking masterclass in Rio. The 2026 All-American bulldozed his way through the 86-kilogram bracket with a flawless 4-0 record. And when we say flawless, we mean untouchable. Mantanona shredded opponents from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and Puerto Rico without surrendering a single point. Outscoring the field by an eye-popping 40-0 margin, his sheer demolition job was the spark that helped Team USA secure the overall team title.

Coby Merrill: Heavyweight Havoc at 125kg

Not to be outdone, heavyweight phenom Coby Merrill went on a tear of his own. The highly touted Iowa State recruit posted a perfect 3-0 record to claim the 125-kilogram crown. Merrill capped off his dominant run by putting an exclamation point on the finals—blanking two-time U17 Pan-American silver medalist Jagroop Dhinsa of Canada with a resounding 10-0 victory.

These two California natives didn’t just win—they made a massive statement for USA Wrestling.
