CORALVILLE, Iowa – The California wrestling pipeline continues to produce international success as Liam Cronin, a former standout for Servite High School, climbed to the top of the podium at the Pan Am Games. After earning a bronze medal in 2025, Cronin returned with a vengeance to claim gold in the 57-kilogram freestyle division.
Dominance in the Early Rounds
Cronin’s path to the finals was defined by relentless offense and technical superiority. He opened the tournament with two dominant technical falls:
Quarterfinals: Cronin shut out Guatemala’s Edwin Segura Guerra. The match ended at the 3:24 mark with a final score of 11-0, highlighted by a powerful underhook toss to the back followed by a clinical gut wrench.
Semifinals: Facing Nicaragua’s Justin Rosales Lacayo, Cronin wasted no time. He surged to an early 2-0 lead and maintained high-pressure tactics to secure an 11-1 victory in less than two minutes.
A High-Stakes Final
The gold medal match pitted Cronin against a formidable opponent: Darian Cruz, a 2024 Olympian and former NCAA Champion representing Puerto Rico. In a tactical, back-and-forth battle, Cronin held his nerve to secure a 5-4 decision, marking the biggest achievement of his international career to date.
Additional Results: Jonovan Smith
Fellow Californian and 2024 Olympian Jonovan Smith (Birmingham High) also competed, representing Team Puerto Rico in the 125-kilogram heavyweight bracket.
Smith’s run ended with a 5th-place finish after a narrow series of matches. He reached the semifinals before falling 4-0 to Canada’s Jorowar Singh. In a tightly contested bronze-medal repechage, Smith was edged out 2-1 by Jose Diaz of Venezuela.
