Kikiniou and Torosian Punch Tickets to Baku

LAS VEGAS, NEV. — The bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip were rivaled only by the brilliance of California’s elite wrestlers last week, as the state solidified its reputation as a powerhouse for international styles. At the conclusion of a grueling U17 Greco-Roman World Team Trials, two Californians stood atop the podium, earning the right to represent Team USA on the world stage.

Arseni Kikiniou (65 kg) and Greg Torosian (71 kg) captured individual titles, spearheading a contingent of five California All-Americans who battled through deep brackets to claim national honors.

The Returning Medalist: Kikiniou Dominates

Arseni Kikiniou (POWR) entered the tournament with a target on his back as a 2025 U17 World bronze medalist. If there was any pressure to repeat, he didn’t show it. Kikiniou put on a technical clinic, recording technical falls in four of his five preliminary matches.

In the best-of-three championship series, he remained clinical, securing his spot on a second consecutive World Team with another technical fall victory. His sheer dominance across the bracket earned him the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award, signaling to the rest of the world that he is hunting for a color change on his next medal.

The New Contender: Torosian’s Flawless Run

While Kikiniou brought experience, Greg Torosian (World Team Training Center) brought an unstoppable momentum. Competing at 71 kg, Torosian navigated his way to his first World Team berth with a defensive masterclass.

Torosian didn’t just win; he overwhelmed the field. He concluded the tournament with a staggering 52-1 scoring margin, essentially shutting down every offensive attempt thrown his way. In the finals, he showed poise beyond his years, taking the series in two straight matches (3-0 and 7-1) to secure his flight to Azerbaijan.

California’s All-American Contingent

The success wasn’t limited to the champions. California showcased its depth across multiple weight classes, with three additional grapplers earning top-five finishes:

48 KG: Sebastian Gutierrez (Silvaback Wrestling Training) – 5th Place

55 KG: Thiago Silva (Silvaback Wrestling Training) – 5th Place

71 KG: Diego Valdiviezo (PHSW) – 5th Place

Destination: Baku

The journey for Kikiniou and Torosian now shifts from the desert heat of Nevada to the shores of the Caspian Sea. The 2026 U17 World Championships are set to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from July 27 to August 2.

Azerbaijan is a global epicenter for wrestling, and the atmosphere will be electric. With a returning medalist in Kikiniou and a surging force in Torosian, California’s impact on the international Greco-Roman scene never looked more promising.

Keep your eyes on these young men as they trade the singlet of their clubs for the Red, White, and Blue this summer.
