While digging through old storage boxes recently, I struck gold: a February 1995 issue of the California Wrestler newsletter. It felt like a total time capsule. I vividly remember collaborating with Bill Grant on the development of this specific issue. Finding it really made me miss that ‘old school’ mid-90s era, when we eagerly waited for the mail to get our wrestling fix instead of just refreshing a browser.
Back then, keeping up with wrestling was a localized effort. Updates were primarily found in the local newspaper, supplemented by the occasional national publication like Amateur Wrestling News, Wrestling USA, or USA Wrestler. Because information was so fragmented, it was genuinely difficult to have broader conversations about the sport; for most fans, the community and the coverage rarely extended beyond their own backyard.
In the digital age, the convergence of social media and mobile technology has created a 24/7 news cycle for wrestling fans. What was once a trickle of information has become a saturated marketplace, where global updates are accessible with a single click.
Looking back at the archives, I recently took a deep dive into the February rankings from over 30 years ago. The depth of talent from that era was truly exceptional. What follows is a side-by-side comparison of the final results against the pre-tournament rankings (81% of top 12 ranked wrestlers placed), along with a statistical breakdown that illustrates why the 1990s remain a golden age for California wrestling on the state, national, and international stages. Enjoy!!
